What AEO is
Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) is structuring your content and data so that when someone asks a direct question — in Google, in an AI assistant, or to a voice device — your page is the one that gets quoted. Featured snippets, “People also ask”, AI Overviews and voice answers all work the same way: one source gets picked, everyone else gets nothing.
AEO and GEO overlap but aren't the same. GEO is about being cited among sources in a generated recommendation. AEO is about being the answer to a specific question. Both reward the same underlying thing: content that is easy to extract and safe to quote.
How engines pick one answer
Answer systems look for three properties before they quote a source:
- Extractability. The answer sits in a self-contained block — a sentence, a short paragraph, a list, a table — that still makes sense when lifted out of your page.
- Confidence. The claim is specific (“ships within 2 working days”), not vague (“fast shipping”). Specific, checkable claims get quoted; marketing language gets skipped.
- Corroboration. The same fact appears consistently across your pages and, ideally, in your structured data. Contradictions kill quotability.
A useful test: could someone screenshot one paragraph of your page, post it alone, and have it still be true and useful? If yes, you have a quotable answer. If it needs the surrounding page to make sense, an answer engine will pass.
Structuring pages to be quoted
Put the question in the heading
“How long does shipping take?” as an H2 outperforms “Delivery info”, because it matches the query verbatim. Collect the real questions buyers ask you — email, chat, reviews — and use their wording.
Answer immediately, then elaborate
The first sentence under the heading should be the complete answer: “We ship within 2 working days, worldwide.” Detail, exceptions and conditions come after. Engines quote the first self-contained answer they find.
Use the formats engines prefer
Short paragraphs for definitions, numbered lists for steps, tables for comparisons and specs. A well-formed FAQ section with real buyer questions is the single most quotable structure most stores can add.
The structured data layer
Schema markup (JSON-LD) is how you hand engines the same answers in machine-readable form. For most websites and stores, the set that matters is small:
- Organization — who you are, official name, logo, contact points.
- Product — name, price, availability, reviews, per product page.
- FAQPage — your real questions and answers, marked up so they can be surfaced directly.
- Article — on guides and posts, so authorship and dates are unambiguous.
The markup must match the visible page. Schema that contradicts what a visitor sees — a stale price, a review count that doesn't exist — is worse than no schema, because it destroys the confidence answer engines need to quote you.
Where to start
Pick your ten most-asked buyer questions. For each: give it a heading in the buyer's words, answer it completely in the first sentence, and mark up the set as FAQPage schema. Then verify the facts in those answers match your policy pages exactly.
